Swiss vote - EU must address consequences
10/02/2014
On Sunday, by the narrowest of margins (50.3%), the Swiss people backed a referendum proposed by the Swiss People's party asking to cap the number of migrants, including from EU countries.
“We deeply regret this result”, says ALDE Party candidate Guy Verhofstadt.
“We believe that if this result is applied, it not only violates the agreement with the EU on free movement of people, but it would endanger the current high performance of the Swiss economy and standard of living”.
While recalling the famous “Guillotine-clause” which allows the EU to suspend all the existing seven bilateral agreements with Switzerland in case even only one is put into doubt, Mr Verhofstadt continues: “We invite Switzerland, with the help of the European Union, to find a swift solution to this delicate situation before it gets out of hand”.
In two weeks’ time the Federal Council is foreseen to start negotiations with Switzerland envisaging to substitute the current bouquet of bilateral agreements by a single legal framework agreement.
